REMS (Rapid Extraction Medical Support)

What we do and what is the job.

Alpine Emergency Services contracts with state and federal agencies to provide Emergency medical services on Wildland Fire across the United States.

What is this REMS job? A REMS team consists of 4 persons. While this can be subject to modification, this is usual deployment. These teams are used to rescue injured fireline personnel. Since fires do not generally happen in flat areas, we are trained in high and low angle rope rescue as well as backcountry extraction. These teams are UTV based and typically deploy to remote rugged terrain as needed.

What consists of a deployment? Teams usually deploy for 14 day assignments. But these can be less or extended to 21 days. It is all based on fire needs. Team members will either travel with their crew and equipment or be flown in . Example: team gets deployed to Oregon, first crew drives to fire with all equipment , second team is flown in 2 weeks later to relieve crew on fire. First team flies home and rests and then goes back in 2 weeks. Company covers all travel costs. On the fire, you will be camping in a tent at the designated area. Usually showers can be provided as well as laundry. Food is provided by the fire. A team member is contracted to work 16 hour days for the duration of the deployment. Generally, this means 12 hours on fire line and then travel and rehab time on either end. You get paid for 16 hours regardless of time worked. Due to fairly strict governmental rules , rarely will you go out for more than 16 hours.
